Dear April;

I realize that your very nature is to be wet and somewhat cool.  But your sibling that came here before you, March, has already tried this stuff with us.  March was the second wettest on record around here.

Maybe you feel a bit usurped.  I can understand that.  After all, you are one half of the star duo in the phrase, “April showers bring May flowers.”  Wet is your gig.  Thunder and lightning are like accessories to you.

But here’s the thing.  We’re saturated around here.  I’m not kidding.  I just walked across my back yard and it was like walking on a wet sponge.  Everything is bedraggled, sopping, rotting.  Your cousin, Winter, was in a pretty bad mood this time around.  She left us with a lot of yard work to do, a lot of cleaning up.  And then March came along and tried to drown us, so surely you understand when we say enough

I know for a fact that you can be rather charming.  Warm and sunny, practically sparkling with joy and happiness.  The birds sing odes to you when you’re like this.  Cats bask in the sun.  Even the most curmudgeonly among us will turn their faces heavenward and smile.  Spring fever is not a bad thing, really.

I guess what I’m saying is, wouldn’t it be wonderful if everyone thought well of you?  Wouldn’t it feel good to encourage people with your copious charms?  Wouldn’t it nice to be dry and sober for a change?

You’re going to be around for three more weeks.  We’d certainly enjoy your company if you chose to be the warm and sunny charmer that we know you to be.

Affectionately —

— Mox
